Hello and welcome to Newtown School.
I hope this website can give you a flavour of what we do here as we learn, play and share our lives together. As I walk around the school I am never sure what I am going to meet around the next corner or in the next room. The sound of a piano drifts out from Mountmellick House, home of the music department, Science students creating giant bubbles outside the science laboratory, the smell of fresh baking oozes from the Home Economics room. Some junior girls run by on their way to a hockey match on the Astro pitch while inside the nearby classroom the students are undisturbed as they are engrossed in the challenge of a project maths conundrum on the interactive screen. On the way back to my office I see the TY,ers gliding across the Foy Hall floor in their ballroom dancing class ( well most of them glide!) and I meet a 6th year on his way to the Guidance Counsellor and we talk about the future and where to next for him; what course?, what university?, what country ?. The future is bright and with an education that is life and for life, he is ready to move on to next step of his chosen path in his journey.
Education for life in the Quaker tradition. That is what we do here as we help guide our young people through the rollercoaster ride of their teenage years. The fantastic staff guide, focus and encourage the tremendous energy of the students so that the students find their strengths and recognise the strengths of others. There are great successes be they in stunning results, great projects or in resolving a difficult and upsetting situation. On all levels of life, people are encouraged to make the best of their situation, to know themselves and to “let their lives speak”.
Each day we begin our school with Collect which is our meeting for worship. Speaking to the silence, Alan, a member of the local Quaker community reminds us all “to walk cheerfully upon the earth, addressing that of God in everybody”. This is our challenge to do that each and every day.
I hope you enjoy your visit to our website and like my walk around the school, that you will find many interesting things around the next “click”. For those of you who have found us for the first time and would like more information please contact our ever helpful office staff and hopefully we will walk around the school with you in person someday soon.
