Sports at Newtown School

The facilities of the school enhance the educational and living experience of our whole school community. Sports at Newtown School play a very important part in creating community spirit within the school walls.

The wider community also avail of the facilities and we welcome the involvement of local groups and clubs. We are situated on a 18 acre site in Waterford city with wonderfully mature grounds and trees. The facilities at Newtown School are available for hire by external groups, find out more here.

Girls Hockey

The Girls teams compete in the South East League and Cup competitions with many of the Girls going forward to gain Inter-provincial honours with the South East “province”. They also play many friendly matches throughout the season both locally and on occasion travelling to Dublin or Belfast to play against other schools. The teams groups are:

  • Senior
  • Inter
  • Junior
  • Minor & 1st Year Girls

Boys Hockey

The Boys Teams compete in the Munster Leagues at all age groups: Senior, Junior and Minor level. Some of the boys progress to represent Munster at Under 16 and Under 18 level. Hockey tours are a great part of the program. Many of the Senior players have benefited from the rebirth of The Waterford Men’s Hockey team and the weekly training sessions with them.

Rugby

Teams across all age groups compete in Munster Schools competitions as well as playing friendly matches throughout the year. The Teams Groups are:

  • Senior – 4th, 5th & 6th Year
  • Junior – 2nd, 3rd and 4th Year
  • Under 13/14 – 1st & 2nd Year.

We wish all this year’s teams every success as their preparations get underway for the season ahead.

Swimming and Lifesaving

The swimming pool is open each afternoon facilitating swimming and lifesaving. The Clan swimming Gala is always a lively event. Lifesaving takes place in our 25m indoor swimming pool and it is a very valuable skill to learn along with providing a tough physical challenge for the swimmers.

Lifesaving follows the Irish Water Safety (IWS) courses leading all the way to International pool lifeguard qualifications.

Badminton

Badminton takes place twice a week for all players in The Foy Hall. The players take part in the Waterford Schools Competition each year. Badminton in Newtown School is played by both girls and boys with a long tradition in both areas.

Tennis

Tennis is available all year on the Tennis courts. During the spring and summer terms teams compete in the Munster leagues. The In-House Clan tennis tournament provides great excitement during the Summer term.

Clan Cross Country Run

An internal “clan system” encourages everyone to get involved.

We have four clans:

  • Green
  • Blue
  • Red
  • Yellow

Clan Captains are nominated and each clan has students from all years. The Clans compete throughout the year and are awarded points and each clan member can make a difference in the overall score of their Clan. On the last day of summer term we hold our annual sports day and prize giving and the winning Clan is announced. Students are in a Clan from first year and remain in that Clan until they leave the school and so they develop a great loyalty to their Clan. Old Scholars still take an interest in how their Clan is doing.
